Bassment Logo Development Round 2

I felt that the Bassment logo could be improved upon. And I thought that hand rendered type would have an appropriate loose, friendly feel for a reggae night.

I started of with a really simple slightly stylised scan of my own hand writing (below).

I put it into Illustrator and went round it with a stroke. As you can see in the image below, over several stages I refined the lettering, making it more consistant until I was happy with it. then the stroke was expended and it could work as a piece of logo type.

I experiment using it in several different logos.

I really like the overall look of it and I think it is appropriate for a reggae, funk, soul and ska night.

Yesterday me and Phill were working on the project and we realised we had so many different versions of the logo, all working in a kind of sticker/seal form that it it would be brilliant if we could use them all to make up the identity. You can see the process in the next post.

Bassement - unused direction

Between me and Phill we came up with the idea of producing some 7" records to accompany the night as promotion. We then thought that it would be cool if we produced a set which worked together to produce and overall image. (See Below).

12x7" vinyl sleeves line up to create the overall image.

All 12 sleeves

We used some stickers of the logos that I had been working on to brand and add consistancy to the sleeves. Below you can see that we tested out a few different versions.

Ultimately we decided not to go with this direction because we felt that the overall look was maybe a bit too experimental and 'out there' for a reggae night based in York which has slightly more conservative tastes. We also felt focusing so heavily on the record sleeve design we were not able to concerntrate on producing a quality poster and flyer and all the primary printed resolutions.

Suma Brief

This is the brief I have written for the Suma Packaging project that I am taking on.

Bassment Logo

I've begun to design a logo for the Bassment clubnight identity. I thought it would be really nice to have some kind of seal kind of logo, me a Phill are thinking of getting a rubber stamp to use as part of the identity and this goes with the rustic, rootsy feel of a reggae night.

A fist is a nice image to use as part of the logo it has a powerful and confident feel as well as the obvious tie ins with the black power movement. I tried to trace a fist that I found on google images in Illustrator (ABOVE) but I really wasn't happy with how it looked.

Luckily Phill had a vectored fist that he had used on another project that we could use for this. It has a much more solid, confident and stylised feel and I think it is more appropriate than the one I drew out.

I tested out some typefaces, to get an idea of what would be appropriate for the feel I was going for.

Next I began to put them into a logo, still experiemnting with some different fonts to see what works best.

I experimented with some different shaps for the seal.

I decided to use this wavey seal shape around the outside of the logo.

I added a reibbon at the bottom of the logo, I think its a nice way of containing the information and strengthens the overall look. I also experimented using the rastafarian colours in the ribbon, but think this is a bit obvious and cheesey for a reggae night.

Experimenting further with layouts and shapes of the logo

I was think that the fist was possibly the weekest part of the logo, because it was vectored in quite a rush, the line work really wasn't very strong. A friend, Nicola Walker who is a really good illustrator drew me another fist which I bagan to experimet with. The line work is really nice and its really detailed and looks a lot better constructed than the previous fist I was working with.

I've experimented with a couple of layouts using the new fist logo.

I think with this brief I maybe need to experiment a bit more widely with the imagery used in the logo, but I also need to, fairley soon, narrow down my development and be decisive about what we are going to go forward with.

Bassment Brief

Me and Phil Armson are collaborating on a brief to design the identity for a soul, funk, ska and reggae club night in York. Below is the brief I have written for the project, obviously this is an early draft and it will possibly change as the project progresses.

YTD Product Shots

Just before Easter I used the lighting tudios to shoot some photos of my YTD work.

Initially I thought a white background would work best for this project. However similarly to my Stalled product shots I thought I would just try out a copuple of shots on a different coloured background to see what they looked like. Black really made the printed work stand out so I also ended up reshooting this whole project with a black background. I think it was worth it because the photos are much more vibrant.

Stalled Product shots

I booked out the lighting studio just before the Easter holidays to take some product shots of the Stalled brief, which I feel is almost finished.

I shot all of the photos I wanted on a black background as initially I thought this would probably looks best. However I tried our a couple of shots on a white background and they looked really good, so I ended up reshooting all the photos with a white background. I might end up using a mixuture of the black and white backgrounds on my boards.

I used my old film slr to help contextualise some of the photos.

I also got some photos of Ollie wearing my T-shirts holding my BMX. I think they look good and definatley help contextualise the shirts. However Ollie was in a bit of a rush and I didn't get a chance to experiemnt with as many shots as I would have liked. I might try and get some other photos of the shirts possibly at the skatepark.
